The MVNO Prepaid Trick: Buy a Flagship Phone for $400 Less
Some MVNOs sell flagship phones at deep discounts to attract customers. The trick: buy the phone, activate for one month, then cancel and use the unlocked phone on any carrier.
How it works
Carriers like Boost Mobile, Cricket, and Metro by T-Mobile sometimes sell phones $200–400 below retail when you activate a new line. The phone is typically locked for a short period (often 60 days), but the total cost — discounted phone + 2 months of service — is still much cheaper than buying at full price or signing up for 36 months of bill credits.
Example: Galaxy S25 via Boost Mobile
Retail price (unlocked): $799
Boost activation price: $449
2 months of Boost service: $80
Total: $529 vs. $799 retail = $270 saved
After 60 days, request unlock and move to any carrier.
Step-by-step
Check which MVNOs currently have phone discounts (Boost, Cricket, Metro).
Buy the phone with a new activation. Use a new number (don't port your main number).
Pay for the required minimum service period (usually 1-2 months).
After the lock period, request a device unlock from the MVNO.
Once unlocked, insert your SIM from your preferred carrier.
Watch out for
- Check the MVNO's unlock policy before buying. Some require 6+ months of service.
- Make sure the phone supports the bands for your target carrier.
- This works best with a spare number. Don't port your primary number for a short-term trick.
