What you need

To port your number away from AT&T, your new carrier will ask for two things: your AT&T account number and a transfer PIN (also called a port-out PIN). These are different from your regular account PIN or password.

Method 1: myAT&T app or website

1

Log in to myAT&T at att.com or open the myAT&T app.

2

Go to AccountManage my plan.

3

Select Transfer my number or Port out.

4

AT&T will generate a transfer PIN. Write it down — it expires in 7 days.

5

Your account number is on your monthly bill or in account settings.

Method 2: Call AT&T

1

Call 1 (800) 331-0500 from any phone.

2

Tell the representative you need a number transfer PIN.

3

They may try to offer you a retention deal — you can decline and proceed.

4

The PIN will be texted to your AT&T phone number.

Common pitfalls

  • Do NOT cancel your AT&T plan before porting. If you cancel first, you lose your number permanently.
  • AT&T device unlock requests take 24–48 hours. Request the unlock before you start the port.
  • If you have an installment plan on a device, the remaining balance will appear on your final bill.
  • Bill credits from device promotions (e.g., "free phone" deals) stop when you leave. You'll owe the remaining device balance.

After you get your PIN

Give your account number and transfer PIN to your new carrier during signup. Most carriers handle the port automatically — your AT&T service will cancel once the port completes (usually within minutes to a few hours).
